Stella di Campalto

Italy

Podere san Giuseppe (a ruined and abandoned land for over half a century) was given to Stella di Campalto Viola as a wedding gift back in 1992. The estate lies at the very southeast corner of the Montalcino zone, outside of Castelnuovo dell’Abate.

The decision to cultivate the land naturally was clear to her right from the beginning, adopting biodynamics since 2002; becoming in 2005 one of the first biodynamic producers in Montalcino. Galestro, calcite, clay, sand, iron and quartz: San Giuseppe has 12 different soil types that radiate around the cellar. This is the reason why the local grape variety, Sangiovese, expresses itself in so many ways. The specificity of the soil gives a unique character to each vineyard. A common  feature  of the  landscape  is the cold temperature of its soils. A paradox, given the eastern exposure at midday and the altitude of 350m above sea level.

Situated on three levels with a drop system, the cellar has been designed to enhance the potential of each individual vineyard: the grapes, hand-picked in small crates, once destemmed, fall into the 30 quintal wooden vats below. Nothing is added before, during and after the arrival of the bunch, except minimal doses of sulphur dioxide before bottling Stella releases her wines much later than other producers - normally about two years later.

The beautiful Stella di Campalto Rosso di Montalcino stands amongst the finest values to be found in all of Tuscany,  while her Brunello Riserva, in its own right, has quickly risen to become a benchmark for the whole region.
