Portal del Priorat

Spain

Alfredo Arribas fondly remembers spending summers during his childhood visiting and helping his grandfather, a vintner in Ribera del Duero. It was only natural that in 2001, after a successful career as an architect, he  started his journey in the magical world of wine, after acquiring the Clos del Portal estate, in Priorat, near the villages El Lloar and Bellmunt.

During the course of the years, he developed a passion to recover a bunch of pre-phylloxera grapevines – Trossos – in the neighboring Montsant appellation, while recently he initiated Vins Nus, a project to recuperate vines of extreme altitude, and transform their grapes to natural wines of pure elegance and complexity. He works his Montsant and Priorat projects in tandem. Although both are farmed biodynamically, he does place different emphasis in each particular region. In Priorat, he makes Vina de Pagos (wines from a single place), while in Montsant has pieced together 12 vineyards of Carignan, Grenache Noir, Grenache Blanc and Grenache Gris.

In the winery his goal is to have as little human intervention as possible, with short macerations, native yeast fermentations, and expressive oak barrel ageing that brings out the true character of the grapes year after year.

Perfectionist and empirical at the same time, he associates elaboration to creativity.
